The auto shop damaged a car window during service.

Christian, we're truly sorry to hear about your window issue. We understand how frustrating it must be to leave with a problem you didn't arrive with. Please contact us so we can review what happened.
Incompatible fluid used during transmission service caused mechanical failure.
Business reply on Google
We’re sorry to hear about the issues you’ve experienced with your transmission. We’ve taken the time to carefully review your service records from your visit, and we can confirm that the correct, manufacturer-recommended transmission fluid was used during your drain and fill service. Additionally, we checked your vehicle history and found that approximately 60,000 miles have been driven since your visit with us. Your vehicle is equipped with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), which, while efficient, is known to be more sensitive than traditional transmissions and can be prone to premature failure if not maintained consistently. For CVT systems, it’s generally recommended that the transmission fluid be serviced every 30,000 miles to help prevent wear and internal damage. Based on the mileage since your last visit, the vehicle would have been due for at least one, if not two, additional fluid services during that time. We always strive to provide accurate service and guidance, and we’re happy to discuss this further or answer any questions you may have.
Staff engaged in deceptive practices and refused to complete vehicle inspection.

We're truly sorry to hear you felt this way, but we want to clarify what actually happened—for your sake and for those reading our reviews. You came to Shums Auto Repair using a discounted state inspection coupon. During the inspection, our certified technician found that your brakes were worn down to metal-on-metal, which is far below the legal minimum (2/32”) required to pass Pennsylvania state safety standards. It’s our responsibility—by law and by ethics—not to pass vehicles that are unsafe to drive. We explained this clearly and respectfully, but you became very argumentative and used language that was not appropriate toward our front desk staff. Despite this, we still treated you with professionalism. You chose to get the brake repairs done elsewhere, which is completely your right. But when you later returned and demanded we immediately place an inspection sticker on your vehicle without an appointment or reinspection (as required by law), we had to say no. Our shop was fully booked that day, and any inspection sticker must follow proper reinspection protocol. You were again very disrespectful to our staff, which we will not tolerate. We pride ourselves on being a profession
The shop quoted an excessively high price for labor.

This situation that you are describing NEVER happened here. Please remove your review and post it on the correct business. I am the owner and I dont normally deal with customers directly, it's handled by office staff. We respond to reviews that are good and bad and we always try to fix the situation when we make a mistake (everyone makes mistakes sometimes). If you want to discuss this with an actual owner you can call the office and they will forward the call to my cell phone. Andrey S.
The shop recommended unnecessary and fraudulent vehicle repairs.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re truly sorry to hear about your experience and the misunderstanding that occurred. At Shums Auto Repair, transparency is at the core of everything we do. Our recommendations—such as the two tires due to edge wear at 3/32nds, the inner axle boot leak, and the alignment to protect your tires from further uneven wear—are always based on a thorough inspection. We strive to show our customers exactly what we find, whether in person or through detailed videos, and this commitment is reflected in the many positive reviews we’ve received from our valued customers. We’ve attempted to reach out to you to discuss this further and invite you back to address any concerns, but we haven’t been able to connect. We apologize for any confusion or frustration this situation may have caused, and we stand by every recommendation we made with your vehicle’s safety and performance in mind. We’d love the opportunity to clear this up and make things right — please feel free to contact us anytime at 215-856-4123 or [email protected]. Your trust means everything to us, and we’re here to help.
The shop failed to repair the vehicle after a tune up.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your recent visit to our auto repair shop. We genuinely appreciate all customer input as it helps us improve our services and address any concerns. We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced during your visit. Our primary goal is to provide excellent service and assistance to all our customers, and it appears that we fell short of your expectations in this instance. Upon inspecting your 2003 BMW, our technicians discovered several underlying issues, including a melted fuse and improperly repaired wiring. Additionally, the vehicle exhibited signs of significant wear and tear with 150,000 miles on the odometer. In such cases, our team aims to provide an honest assessment to ensure the safety and satisfaction of our customers. We recommended against performing a simple "tune-up" because your vehicle required more extensive repairs and maintenance due to its age and condition. We believe it is our responsibility to provide accurate information and not undertake unnecessary work that may not address the root causes of the problems you were experiencing. We are pleased to hear that you found our staff to be f
The repair shop estimate is significantly higher than the dealership rate.

I'm very sorry you were not happy with our estimate. I understand that you were frustrated with Honda and upset because as you said, ''only Honda makes you do this service". Unexpected services are always tough to deal with because it was not planned. When you came in we gave you a worst case scenario on what this job could cost including all the possible gaskets and fluids, fees and taxes that came along with performing the job correctly. Our labor rate is $143 an hour here and I believe we provide the best value for the money in this area based on the services we provide and the high quality technician we employ. We also stand behind the work we do with double the warranty that the dealership provides (2 year, 24,000 mile parts and labor). If we can be of help in the future, please reach out to us. We promise that we will do our best to provide you with the trustworthy, high quality service that we can and do our best to make sure you are completely satisfied. Thank you for your feedback. I hope you have a great day.
Staff attempted to upsell unnecessary repairs to increase the final bill.

Although we try our absolute best to help every customer we can sometimes we are unable to do it due to a type of request. You came in with a broken hose and no vehicle to see how much the repair would cost. Unfortunately without inspecting the vehicle in person we can not possibly give you a price on a repair. We tried to explain it to you and offered to inspect the issue free of charge. We told you that it could be a simple repair or a 2000 repair and we need to see the vehicle first to determine just that. I hope you find a shop that will serve you better than we could.
The shop charged for an inspection and provided an overpriced estimate.

Deanna, you came in requesting a PA safety inspection because you told me it was "long overdue". We performed such service and gave you a list of repairs that were very unsafe for PA safety inspection. We would not perform a service that you wouldn't request. Your boyfriend then comes in saying that he can do all the work by himself for cheap. Please tell your boyfriend to fix your vehicle for your safety and for others. It is absolutely unfair to give someone bad feedback when no one lied or took advantage of you. You paid for ONLY the work you requested and we did our best to provide the best possible service. It is obviously cheaper to do the work yourself as compared to paying a reputable repair facility to do the work and provide a 2 year parts and labor warranty. Thank you for your time.
The business overcharged significantly for a simple light bulb replacement.
Business reply on Google
Hi Steve, we informed you about the small repairs with a video and a phone call with a detailed estimate of repairs. You approved the repairs but had cold feet when it was time to pay. We NEVER perform any work that was not approved by the customer. $30 for brake light bulb install is a fair price. If you thought it was expensive you should have declined and did it yourself. We are not the cheapest shop nor we are the most expensive but we offer 2year/24k mile warranty which many shops don't offer around here. I'm sorry you feel like you were mistreated and if we make a mistake we always own up to it and make it right. In your case I am not sure what we could have done differently. I hope you find a shop that will be up to your standards.
Customer charged unexpected fees for waiting room usage.
Business reply on Google
I am very sorry you were not satisfied with the service we provided. We made you aware that if you wait in the office for your vehicle inspection to be finished you have to pay the full price ($59.95+tax). The $40 off coupon works if you drop your vehicle off for the day so we can be flexible with when we work on it. If you wait, we have to stop work on other cars and do yours as quickly as possible. That is what we did for your mother. The coupon clearly states NO WAITING. Your mother did not speak any english and trying to communicate with you as an interpreter on the phone was difficult. We tried our best to explain. I hope you find a shop you will be happy with. Thank you for your feedback.
poor customer service and unpleasant shop environment

I'm very sorry Brian, it looks like we dropped the ball with you. I was the one that explaned to you why we do not provide ballpark estimates over the phone. We believe it does not serve our customer well when we pull numbers out of thin air without seeing and inspecting your vehicle first. I asked you to come in first thing in the morning and we would provide you an acurate estimate. You showed up at 11 oclock when all of our bays were full and we would not be able to take you in right away. We offered for you to leave your vehicle with us but you declined. I'm sorry we were not able to be more accomodating. We also did not want you to sit in the waiting room for hours waiting for an estimate and getting frustrated. As far as the smell in our waiting room, I am sorry, but that is a complete lie! I can guarantee there is no cleaner waiting room at any independent repair shop in the whole city. We take pride in what we do and in our facility. 99% of cars come in and leave fixed the same day, we do not play games. We also do not perform any work without prior approval. We offer a NO CHARGE preliminary inspection and at that point tell you if there are any testing fees needed for appr
The business charges excessive prices for automotive repair services.

Hi Tyreik, I tried to check our database for your name and could not find it. I just wanted to figure out what we did on your vehicle that was so expensive. We definitely don't charge manufacturing prices but we do charge a fair price to fix your vehicle. Obviously depending on how complicated the repair is and how bad of a shape your car is in will determine the cost of the repair. It looks like you left a review for another shop saying they charge 3 times as much as it should be. I can't speak for every shop but I can tell you that the cost of proper car repair is never cheap. My technicians refuse to work for free or even for minimum wage. I am as upset about that as you are. We always use only quality parts and qualified techs to repair your vehicle and that allows us to provide the best warranty of 2 years and 24,000 miles on PARTS AND LABOR. You can see by our other reviews that overwhelming majority of our customers appreciate the service we provide. And by the way, you are absolutely correct about learning to fix your car yourself. It is WAY cheaper. Just like plumbing, roofing and electrical work when you do it yourself.. All you have to do is go to a trade school for a ye
Excessive pricing for oil change, spark plugs, and diagnostic test.
Business reply on Google
I am very sorry that you were dissatisfied with the service we provided. You came in with the engine misfiring and stated that it has been happening for a while. You approved a fuel system test for $159 and your misfire issue turned out to be a bad spark plug on cylinder one. The other spark plugs were also in bad shape and showed signs of oil burning. I called you and you did confirm that the oil consumption issue has been ongoing for a while as well. At that point I recommended performing an oil change with a thorough flush to see if the oil consumption can be minimized. I explained all the charges and you approved the final price that was discussed. When you came to pick up your vehicle you paid that exact amount that you approved, there were no changes or any additional fees. I know that dealing with some customers that don't speak english very well sometimes poses a challenge but I tried my best to explain everything from my side and I was under the impression that you did understand everything. If we made a mistake and did not fix your car right, I would like to make it right, please come back but if the price was the only issue, I am sorry, you approved it and we only perfor
The shop charged more than the advertised price for an oil change.
Business reply on Google
You can not bring your own oil in and demand I honor a coupon, just like you can't bring your own steak to a restaurant and demand they cook it for you. I told you it was going to be $30 before we did any work and you declined and left. You were not charged for anything. I hope you find a shop that will dance to your demands but it's not going to be us. We have procedures that we follow in order to provide the highest quality service to our good customers.
failed vehicle repairs and excessive labor charges

Please stop posting fake reviews because you don’t like that we were honest about your brother trying to sell a car in horrible condition to our customer. It’s very low to stick someone with a car that has multiple serious issues that you know about. It does not matter that it was only $3000. It’s still a lot of money to someone and they can not afford to put another $3000 into that car to make it road worthy. Have some honor and fix the car before selling it to unsuspecting people. Or at least tell them about the issues you know about. This is no way to live your life scamming people and being mad that someone called you out on your scam. I will also report both of the cars that your brother is selling on offerup to make sure people know what kind of people you are.
Poor quality vehicle repairs and unprofessional staff behavior.
Business reply on Google
I understand that you are upset because the car you were trying to sell to one of our customers turned out to be in bad shape and needed a lot of work. We have a responsibility before the person that is paying us for a pre-purchase inspection to disclose all the issues to them. Please stop selling cars in substandard condition and sticking my customers with huge repair bills after the car is in their name. When we perform a pre-purchase inspection we are very thorough to make sure our customers are making the right financial decision. On the other hand, we have no responsibility before you to make sure you sell the car and make money. Have a nice day and please consider treating other people the way you would like to be treated. You would be very upset if someone would sell a car in bad condition to your mother or wife. Edit: on 1/5/2017 you brought your BMW 5 in for an alignment, you paid $85 + tax and you were told that your brake light was on because whoever replaced your brakes previously, did not replace the sensors that were supposed to be a part of the job. You told us you would come back to get the sensors replaced at a later date. You came back 1/6/2017 to get the sensors
Staff refused to assist customer with emergency gas container request

I'm Andrey and I was the one that told you we did not have a gas can to borrow. We used to have multiple cans and now we don't have any to borrow because people never brought them back. I did not give you any attitude and nobody was rude to you, all i said is that we don't have a can we can borrow. You walked away without saying anything. We provide great service to all of our customers and that is why we have the best reviews out of any repair shops in Philadelphia. It is totally unfair for you to give me a one star for not giving you a gas can! if I did something wrong to your vehicle, that's another story and I would apologize and make it right. P.S. I don't even remember what race you were so don't bring some bogus claims about you being treated differently for your race. We work with everybody every day and the vast majority of people are thrilled with our service.
Repair failed immediately and shop refused to provide warranty service

Ruslan, you paid to get the AC system refilled because it was empty after the vehicle was totaled after an accident. Once the system was full, the used compressor that you installed yourself did not come on. You then approved the testing fee to find the reason the compressor was not coming on. Technician performed the testing and found that the used compressor was defective and needed to be replaced with a new unit. The estimate for the repair was a little over 2 thousand dollars. You told us that you could not afford the repair and took the vehicle. You paid $146 to refill the system and $189 to diagnose the problem. You were not charged for any repairs since you could not afford a proper repair. If you remember our conversation, I have told you how horribly your vehicle was repaired after the accident with multiple places of frame damage that was not fixed. I also told you that whoever fixed the frame damage should go to jail due to the vehicle not being safe to drive on the road. **We will be reporting this vehicle to the state inspection department so they can see who performed the enhanced safety inspection and gave this vehicle reconstructed title.
